Pom Poms: a Peek at Its History

The history of pom poms can be traced back to mid 1930s when universities and high schools began to use them. Jim Hazzlewood copyrighted and created the first cheerleader pom poms. The pom poms he created back then were made out of crepe paper and were seen to be very fragile as strands of it fall out during cheers and if ever there was rain or storm, its colors would wear off leaving marks on the cheerleaders hands.

When 1965 came, Fred Gastoff invented the vinyl version of pom poms and then was later on introduced to different universities and high school squads. Unlike its crepe paper predecessors, vinyl pom poms are lighter in weight with various choices of handles and batons that can be inserted to the pom poms itself. Choices of colors became endless with vinyl and one can even suggest a specific design to personalize it. Vinyl pom poms also come in different sizes nowadays.

Aside from pom poms, cheerleaders are also using cheer balls. Cheer balls are said to be smaller in diameter and have a thousand strands making it a perfect tool for cheering.
