Compact Sewing Machines

Looking for the power of a full-sized sewing machine in a small, super-portable package? Then a compact sewing machine could be exactly what you need.

Compact models are the middle ground between a light-task mini sewing machine and a full size sewing machine.

Unlike mini sewing machines, many of which have an option for cordless use, almost all compact machines run on electric power and a foot control is standard. They’re larger than mini machines but have a smaller footprint than standard home sewing machines, and though they’re heavier than minis, their ultra-light weight still gives them maximum portability.

But don’t let their size fool you. Many compact machines pack plenty of power to handle just about any sewing need. There are compact machines that can handle even heavy fabrics like denim with ease.

Compact machines range from the simple and very basic to models with a surprising array of features and conveniences. Many manufacturers offer compact models that include free-arm capability, drop in bobbins, adjustable stitch lengths, and even a variety of stitches. Some manufacturers even offer full capability machines in a very small package, and a few compact models even includes a buttonholer.

What to look for in a compact sewing machine

The key to making the right selection is to match the machine to its intended use. Compact sewing machines are available in such a wide range of models that it’s easy to find exactly the right machine for you. If you’ll be using it for small craft projects and basic repairs, a very basic model will probably do all you need. If you want to do more extensive sewing, there are compact machines available that are completely capable of start-to-finish garment construction.

Size counts … but how much it counts is up to you. If space is truly at a premium in your available work area, pay particular attention to the footprint of the machine you’re considering. Though all compact machines are smaller and lighter than standard machines, their size and weight vary among models and manufacturers. Generally speaking, the more full-featured the machine, the more it weighs, so you can set your own balance between features and light-weight portability.
